## How it is calculated

Missed calls per month = calls per day × open days × share unanswered. Include out-of-hours calls: for a business open 45 hours a week, nobody answers the phone for two thirds of the week.

Customers lost = missed calls × share who would have bought × share who never call back. The second filter is the one that matters: someone who cannot reach you usually does not try again, they call the next result on Google.

Revenue lost = customers lost × average customer value. This is conservative because it only counts the first purchase: it ignores repeat business and referrals.

The defaults are a reasonable estimate for a local service business. Adjust them with real data from your phone system if you have it.

### How many calls does a small business typically miss?

Between 20% and 30% in a business with a receptionist, and over 50% in one with nobody dedicated to the phone. Most of them are not peak-hour calls, they are out-of-hours calls: evenings, weekends and public holidays.

### Does voicemail solve the problem?

Barely. Most people who reach voicemail hang up without leaving a message, and many of the messages that do get left are returned hours later, when the caller has already booked elsewhere. Voicemail records the loss, it does not prevent it.
